Day 2: Weekend In Monterey

*Update: This Post was Featured on WordPress.com’s Freshly Pressed.

I woke up the next morning with excitement. It’s aquarium day!
As I entered the Monterey Bay Aquarium, to the left is the infamous Kelp Forest. At 28 feet, the Kelp Forest is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world. 2000 gallons of seawater is pushed through this exhibit every minute.

Their beautiful jellies are featured in The Drifters Gallery. This exhibit just reopened May 28th, just in time for summer.

Unfortunately their Outer Bay Exhibit was underconstruction during my visit, but will reopen as The Open Sea Exhibit on July 2nd this year. It will house a few species of sharks, sea turtles, and rays to list a few.

The last exhibit I visited was The Secret Lives of Seahorses. The $2.25-million exhibition features 45 species of seahorses here, 8 of which are endangered. This area was first featured April 2009 and will be open only until September of this year.

After an awesome few hours at the aquarium it was time to head back home.. but not before I ended my trip with caramel apples from The Chocolate Factory =D!

  1. I visited that aquarium recently, but your pics are WAAAAAYYYYYYYY better… Thanks for sharing, it has reminded me how much I loved Cali!

  2. Thanks for bringing back some great memories – I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1990s and made several visits to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It’s a beautiful site. Parts of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home were filmed there. Great photos!

  3. I visited this aquarium some years ago. Your photos came out better than mine! Congratulations on Freshly Pressed, and thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

  4. Yur pics make me want to go there sometime! For me I luv the ocean and the creatures that live there! I also luv candied apples! Makes me wish I had one now 🙂

  5. I love the jelly fish and sillouhette pics, they are gorgeous! I really like all of the pics but those 2 are my favs! 🙂 Thanks for sharing and congratulations on being freshly pressed! 🙂

  6. I love your photographs! Aquariums are one of my favorite things. I finally got to visit the Atlanta Aquarium this past Spring and I spent about six hours wandering around with my mouth dropped open like a little kid. I especially like your seahorse photos…. Seahorses are so amazing! Their variety never fails to amaze me. I also like your picture of eating the candy apple–it looks delicious!!

  7. i heard such wonderful things about the aquarium and i cant wait to check it out for myself. i’m actually seriously considering moving to monterey once i have the financial capability. its between there and a few other coastal spots. 🙂

  8. I was there last August; the “Secret Lives of Seahorses” exhibition was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. Thanks for sharing your photos, they bring back great memories!

  9. My husband and I honeymooned in Monterey Bay ten years ago. We went to the aquarium and I’ve been dying to go back since. We still have this CD of relaxing ocean music we got there. It’s an amazing place!

  10. YEEEAH!! WOOOOT! the best part is where all the fish swim in a circle.. although i kind of feel bad for them but still. hope the rest of your central coast stay is just as lovely

  11. This is so close to home that it is comforting. 🙂 I love monterey and I go there all the time, but it has been a while since I stopped by the aquarium. Maybe I’ll do that on my next trip. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Love the aquarium!!! Of course you spoke about my two favorites….but I would have to add the penguins also.

You have to check out a post I did a week ago about sea horses…..did you know the male seahorses have the babies? I learned all kind of interesting facts about sea horses.

  13. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Monterey but after looking at your pictures I want to go again. I will have to check out the Aquarium. Congratulations on being featured on Freshly Pressed!

  14. I love your aquarium pictures. I always have so much trouble taking photos in them due to the low lighting but yours are amazing. MB aquarium is on my bucket list so hopefully I’ll get there one day. Keep it up.

  15. Love your photos! I just blogged and posted a ton of photos about the aquarium, but I have to say yours are a thousand times better. Nice going!

  16. Your photos remind me of John Steinbeck’s book, that all who love sea creatures should read ” The Log From The Sea Of Cortes” .

  17. Correction. ‘The Log From The Sea Of Cortez’ . I don’t know why I didn’t let my own memory serve me correctly on that spelling of Cortez. For those who still love books and reading, it is a great book.

  18. Congratulations on being featured on Freshly pressed. Great pictures and I love Aquariums too. I just wrote a post on my visit to the Georgia Aquarium.

  19. What gorgeous photos! I had always heard the Monterey aquarium was awe-inspiring, but now I am considering a trip to see that kelp forest in person. Maybe I can manage it by September to see that seahorse exhibit… it’s always fun to find the seahorse when they’re in “camo.” Thank you for sharing.

  20. Perhaps I failed to add. The Book by John Steinbeck, was written about the sea where your creatures in the Monterey aquarium were found. I add this, just in case most people don’t know,… which seems apparent since I see my comments are still being held back after three days.

  21. These pictures are gorgeous! There’s nothing that I love more than a really good aquarium – they’re just so beautiful, and obviously so far removed from what you generally see in day to day life.

Also, way to give me a huge sweet tooth with those apple pictures – nice work!

  22. I haven’t been to the aquarium in forever! And I absolutely love the Chocolate Factory. What fun!
